The River Lethe

2018

Inkjet, relief, and conte crayon on handmade paper

Down in the underworld of the ancient Greeks, those who drink from the River Lethe experience complete forgetfulness. Here on the surface in 2018, by conservative counts there were 24 school shootings in the United States. The River Lethe combines digital collage techniques and anciens regime woodcut techniques to present local news images of all 24 shootings at the same time. The work resists the idea that one must distance oneself from calamity in order to gain perspective.
